Statement regarding the insurrection at the US Capitol

Contact: Dylan Rosenthal, Director of Communications, udeldems@gmail.com

Today, the United States Capitol was stormed and breached for the first time in decades. The safety of Members of Congress, Congressional staffers, Capitol support staff, and members of the press was directly threatened. While what we saw today was the result of a massive security failure — one that must be investigated and remedied immediately — this sedition was directly incited by President Trump and his supporters, and was enabled by almost the entire Republican Party over these last four years. That especially goes for the Congressional Republicans objecting to the results of this year’s free and fair elections.

The Republican Party, including GOP leader Kevin McCarthy and a majority of his caucus, and GOP Senators, wanted to score political points and pander to the fringes of their base by refusing to acknowledge Joe Biden as the President-elect and calling for overturning the election. Make no mistake, Republicans enabled the actions of what we saw today.

Joe Biden will be the President of the United States in 14 days. But we strongly believe that the current occupant of the White House, who should have been removed a long time ago, must be removed immediately. Whether this is done through the 25th Amendment or through impeachment, we cannot afford even another 14 days of a Donald Trump Presidency; and our democracy can no longer afford it.

We are grateful to hear that Senators Carper and Coons, and Congresswoman Blunt Rochester were able to remain safe throughout the ordeal, and we hope that they and their colleagues are able to safely return to the Capitol to fulfill their duties as soon as possible.
